A confession: I am not reading this book just yet. But I will start it tonight. I have roughly 40 pages left on the Thurston and I am
not posting a third teaser for it because I am so. close. to being done.
Empire Star is a science fiction novella; according to Samuel R. Delany's bio, it was written in ten days in 1965 to finance a trip to Europe. The copy I have is bundled with the short novel
Babel-17 and I haven't decided whether I'll be reading that as well, but probably. Just from the little bit of scanning I have done, I love Delany's style.
Teaser Tuesdays are hosted by
Should Be Reading. It works as follows:
- Grab your current read.
- Open to a random page.
- Share two teaser sentences from somewhere on that page.
- Be careful not to include spoilers!
- Include the title and author.
From
Empire Star by Samuel R. Delany, p17:
"Suddenly an idea caught in his head, swerved around a corner, and came up banging and clanging behind his ears. 'Will I get to see Earth?'"

Interesting! I love old sci-fi.
My teasers are here.
I've been overdosing lately on older science fiction too. Though Delaney's still much more recent than the early masters.
I know I read Babel-17 years ago and really liked it, even if I have no recollection now about it. All the more reason to read it again, eh?
Great teaser! And you've whetted my appetite to get back into the older SF.
Meanwhile, my own teaser is from medieval times, and is here.
Thanks for stopping by, lisa and phyl! I am thrilled to report that Empire Star is even better than the above quote makes it sound. It's brilliant. I'm almost done and I'm itching to read more Delaney. He even throws in homage to Theodore Sturgeon, which has got me very curious, as I've never read any Sturgeon and now feel I should.
